CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – Mounties in Chilliwack are looking for whoever tried to dig up a grave site earlier this month.
It happened at a cemetery on Chilliwack Mountain Road; last weekend, a family visiting the site of a loved one discovered the ground had been partially dug up. Several shovels were left at the scene.
The coffin of the deceased, who had been resting there for 20 years, had been cemented closed and was not breached.
Mounties believe thieves were after family heirlooms, including jewellery.
“This is a disturbing occurrence,” says Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen. “We are taking this very seriously. The cemetery is located in a rural and remote area so we are asking the assistance of the general public in solving this.”
If you have any information, you’re asked to call the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
