Chilliwack daycare getting flack for staying open during strike

By

CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – Some parents in the Fraser Valley may be left scrambling when rolling teachers strike hit this week.

The daycare at McCammon Traditional Elementary in Chilliwack decided to stay open during last week’s closures, but that’s about to change.

“A is for Apples” owner Kathy Antonio says she has full approval from the teachers union and doesn’t see why she has to close down.

“They are preschool daycare children are not enrolled in school, we’re non-unionized, but also if I was renting space in a building that had nurses in it, and they [went on strike], I would still be able to operate.”

“You know it does affect the staff of the daycares because most daycares have hourly paid staff so then they’re losing out on wages, and this isn’t their fight,” argues Antonio.

The district says the board will look at options if provincial lockouts come down at the end of June.
