VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Many drivers have told News1130 about the panic they feel when a red light camera flashes as they cross an intersection on a green or yellow.
There may be no need to feel that sense worry over getting a ticket though because those cameras can routinely flash out of context.
The reasons for doing so include a glitch, but more often than not — monthly actually — technicians are doing remote maintenance to make sure the focus or exposure is correct.
“If there’s a ticket that is generated we do have enforcement officers who review each ticket and we always make sure each ticket is judged on its own merit. So if there’s any indication that there’s a light malfunction a ticket would not go out,” explains Jill Blacklock with ICBC. “There are few errors that are with this system. It’s monitored as would be required and there are times where the equipment may need to be tuned.”
BC’s red light camera program gets quite a few calls from worried drivers who think they’re getting busted for something they didn’t do.
