Two forest fires burning in southwest BC

CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – Crews are working to put out a small fire burning near Chilliwack.

The Wildfire Management Branch says fires this time of year are not uncommon.

“We also want to urge the public to be cautious, especially with hunting season upon us as they are out in the back country to be very cautious with any open source of heat. So that can be a flame that they might have on a campfire or the hot exhaust on engines,” explains Fire Information Officer Dustin Eno.

Earlier this afternoon, Barry called our newsroom, saying he could see the fire crawling down Vedder Mountain.

“You can smell the smoke for sure and you can see the plume that comes down into the Valley. I’m sitting in the parking lot of the Yellow Barn Country Produce and it looks right at the fire itself and you can see a bit of the flames but it’s bigger than what it was earlier.”

Another fire was burning in Sooke, which is west of Victoria on Vancouver Island. This one started as a structure fire and spread to the forest, but is now completely contained.

People in the area who had been evacuated from their homes have since been allowed back in.
