UBCM convention begins in Whistler today

WHISTLER (NEWS1130) – It’s a chance for mayors to share their concerns and lobby the provincial government: The Union of BC Municipalities convention gets underway today in Whistler.

We asked OMNI-TV political analyst Kim Emerson if politicians actually accomplish anything at these gatherings.

“You’ve got to wonder sometimes!” he tells us. “They hold the conventions in places where you really don’t need to be sending that many delegates on the taxpayers’ dime. For instance, last year it was Vancouver in the summertime. This year, it’s Whistler in the summertime.”

Both Premier Christy Clark and NDP leader John Horgan will be speaking to delegates at the UBCM convention.

“The only thing that I’ve seen so far that is a rational reasonable thing that the UBCM has done [is] they’ve put together for the very first time a report on the impact of BC Ferries on coastal communitities and pointed out that it’s a  $2.3 billion drag on the economy… what the government’s done in raising ferry fares,” says Emerson.

That report links ferry fares to the amount of money that’s available for government services.
