YVR screener’s ‘sleight of hand’ should earn jail time: Crown

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – A prosecutor says a Vancouver airport security screener who stole cash and personal items from travellers should spend four to six months in jail.

Yuriy Ruvinskiy appeared for a sentencing hearing in Richmond provincial court Thursday following his guilty plea in August to eight theft charges.

Crown Counsel Gerri-Lyn Nelson says a jail sentence is warranted, noting the breach of trust included 28 separate incidents between in February and March this year.

Nelson played videos showing Ruvinskiy pocketing cash, including a US $100 bill, and personal items, like a cellphone, through sleights of hand that she said were repetitive, systematic and skillful.

She said the sentence must denounce the offences, deter others from committing them and she noted restitution isn’t an option because the victims were travellers and not everybody knew exactly how much was taken from them.

Judge David St. Pierre has adjourned the case until next Thursday when the court will fix a date for defence counsel to make submissions.
