SAN JOSE, CA (NEWS1130) – Ryan Miller made 34 stops, including 14 in the third period, and the Vancouver Canucks survived a late scare to beat the San Jose Sharks 3-2. Nick Bonino scored the game-winner late in the second period.
Miller had to stand on his head for several stretches during the game, including the final few minutes of the third period. After Miller made a highlight reel stop to force a late face-off to his left, the Sharks controlled the puck, and sent it in front, which led to Joe Thornton banking it off the Canucks’ goalie and in. The call on the ice was a goal, but review showed the puck crossed the line after time expired, so it did not count.
The Canucks were under siege in the opening few minutes of the game, but Miller stopped the first 10 shots he faced to help settle things down. San Jose finally beat him just past the midway mark of the first period, as James Sheppard got his second goal of the season.
Vancouver tied the game with just 7.7 seconds to play in the first period. Radim Vrbata kept the puck on a two-on-one and beat Antti Niemi with a quick shot.
San Jose went ahead with a Logan Couture powerplay goal midway through the second period, but Alex Edler responded on a Vancouver powerplay just 122 seconds later.
Nick Bonino scored the game-winner with 2:40 to play in the second, as he made a move off the right wing and then snapped his seventh goal of the season. It was his third goal in two games.
Miller is now 10-1-0 to begin his first season with Vancouver. He started last season 1-10-0 in Buffalo.
The win was the second in a row for Vancouver, and sixth in the past seven games. The Canucks will try to keep rolling when they visit the LA Kings on Saturday.
