Avalanche danger rating ‘high’ in many parts of BC

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The warm, wet and windy weather is expected to increase the avalanche danger around the southern part of the province.

“When we get big storms [and] heavy loading from snow, wind, or rain, we see a spike in avalanche danger,” says Cam Campbell with Avalanche Canada.

He’s seen that happen, primarily in the coastal areas of BC. “Both north and south coast — as well as the southern part of the province, throughout the Kootenay boundary.”

Campbell tells us the danger rating is high, “but at this point, given the current conditions, I don’t suspect too many people are going out.”

“It’s just terrible riding conditions in most areas and at most elevations. The weather is just not conducive for actually heading out on the mountains, at this point,” he says.

If you do venture into the mountains, don’t travel alone. Always carry an avalanche transceiver, a probe and a shovel — and know how to use them.
