Great white shark spotted off Washington State coast

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Can’t wait for the warm weather so you can go swimming at one our many gorgeous local beaches?

A Great White Shark was seen off the Washington State coast this week.

It’s odd but not out un-heard of says Dr. Chris Lowe, director of Cal State University Long Beach’s Shark Lab. “It’s becoming a bit more common. What is unusual is the time of year, normally we hear about it earlier in the fall. This late in the season is kind of unusual but the water has been unusually warm this year and I think that’s opened up opportunities for these sharks to move further North.”

So should you be scared to go back in the water? “I really don’t think people have much to worry about and the reason is these occurrences tend to be fairly rare and you know, I think most of the range for white sharks is further south,” Lowe explains.

Lowe isn’t sure but says it is likely following a seal population.

Sharks have been known to venture as far as Alaska.
