VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Tenants of Simon Fraser University’s Louis Riel House say they received eviction notices over the weekend, but the university claims those were merely invitations to a town hall meeting tonight that will help them explore their options.
Executive Director of Student Affairs Nancy Johnston says the student housing is reaching the end of its life. “And so it has had increasing needs over time so we are continuing to do the maintenance and the rehab that is needed to keep the building safe and healthy.”
Johnston admits there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. “We’ve got students with families in Louie, we’ve got grad student, we’ve got undergraduates, we’ve got single students and we didn’t want to presume that we had the answers we want to hear. What each of the residents feel is most important to them.”
Around 20 families will be displaced by the move, and some of them say they may not be able to afford to live on Burnaby Mountain much longer.
