Major Metro Vancouver water project nears completion

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – After about a decade of construction, two 7.1-kilometre-long treated water tunnels between the Seymour-Capilano Filtration Plant and the Capilano Reservoir are being flushed for the first time today.

We already have some of the best drinking water in the world, now Metro Vancouver says it’s about to get that much better.

Metro Vancouver ‘s Utilities Committee Chair Darrell Mussatto explains how it works.  “It means the water from both the Capilano Reservoir and the Seymour reservoir will both be filtered water and will be UV disinfected and have some chlorine added to it.”

He adds the tunnels will be a big help, especially on rainy days.

“Now, when we do get these rain events we get cloudy water in the Capilano — it will all be going over to the Seymour-Capilano filtration plant.  It will be filtered, UV disinfected and then sent back to the Capilano to go back into the distribution system.”

Water may be seen flowing into the Capilano Reservoir during the flushing of the tunnels, but Metro Vancouver says it poses no risk to water quality or the environment.
