VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A huge mattress recycling warehouse fire burning in South Vancouver kept crews busy this evening. Roughly 50 firefighters from three halls have been called out to Sherbrook St, off South East Marine Drive.

Nicole drove by the blaze which started just before 6:30 p.m. saying the smoke can be seen from far away and was impacting traffic. “You can barely see when you’re driving over that little area just by Mitchell Island. It’s all engulfed with smoke, like you have to slow down and people are trying to look of course, but the whole top of the building is just black smoke coming up.”
Deputy Chief Brian Godlonton with Vancouver Fire says the flames spread quickly.
“We upgraded the alarm quite fast. We’ve got a mattress warehouse here that was fully involved upon arrival with heavy fuel load inside. The warehouse is completely full and there are a number of barrels of fuel in here as well so we’ve been battling both a lot of fuel as well.”
The business was closed at the time. The cause is under investigation.
