Fourth sinkhole develops along Evergreen Line

PORT MOODY(NEWS 1130) – More headaches for people driving through and living in Port Moody.

A fourth Evergreen Line construction-related sinkhole has developed, this time on Clarke Road near Seaview.

Evergreen Line Project Director Amanda Farrell says they identified a depression which turned into a hole that came to the surface of the road.

“We have the area fenced off while crews are addressing the situation. Obviously, safety is our first priority so we are detouring the public and asking them to avoid the area,” she says.

She believes the sinkhole is a metre or two across but doesn’t know how deep it is. She says it’ll be filled with cement in the morning.

The three previous sinkholes have been a major inconvenience for both drivers and people living nearby – especially with non-local traffic being detoured through neighbourhoods. They opened up during maintenance on the tunnel boring machine below Clarke Road.

The two-kilometre long tunnel comes out near the intersection of Clarke Road and Como Lake Avenue and should be finished by the middle of this year.

· Drivers travelling southbound on Clarke Road, from Port Moody to Coquitlam, will be detoured at Cecile Drive (to Angela Drive and Glenayre Drive to access Clarke Road).

· Northbound traffic on Clarke Road, from Coquitlam to Port Moody, will be detoured at Mount Royal Drive (to Glenayre Drive for travel to Port Moody).
