PEMBERTON (NEWS 1130) – If your home is wiped out by a landslide, your insurance won’t cover you — that’s what a family near Pemberton is learning.
Essentially it comes down to the fact that the only people who would seek that sort of coverage are those who would be specifically at risk.
“The reason for that is it’s very difficult from an insurance perspective, to assess a risk of something like landslides and mudslides, and really the only people who are going to be interested in that type of insurance are those that are at the highest risk,” says Daniel Mirkovic with Square One Insurance.
Mirkovic says the family may, however, be eligible for provincial disaster relief through the federal and provincial governments.
“That essentially helps homeowners in the event that a specific loss, like in a landslide, isn’t covered under home insurance policies,” says Mirkovic.
This weekend, the home of a young family in Birken was heavily damaged by a mudslide.
Thankfully the couple and their three-year-old child were not hurt.
A special weather statement warns of more heavy rain tomorrow night and Friday that could trigger more flooding and slides.
