The Music of Junk set to hit the stage in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A lot of people complain that music is just recycled these days, but that’s just what one group wanted to do.
It’s called The Music of Junk and it’s an eco-friendly orchestral extravaganza.
Creator Paul Snider got the idea to put together a show full of non-musical instruments.
“There’s a cello built out of a tin garbage can, a bass built out of a wheelbarrow, there’s violins built out of baseball bats, paper mache, a field hockey stick and the duct from a dryer vent.”
Snider says it did take a while for the performers to adjust to the instruments, but they were able to eventually.
“A lot of it was ‘okay here’s the instrument, try to learn to play it and let’s put together these songs’ and so it really was a cart-before-the-horse type of thing.”
Snider says he got the idea when he was in Kenya in 2011 and heard the kids using their desks as percussion instruments.
The show will be at the Waterfront Theatre beginning with a preview on Wednesday.
