Annual Eastside Culture Crawl starts today

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s a big day for folks in Vancouver’s arts scene.

The Eastside Culture Crawl is back for its 19th year.

Sometimes it can be a little intimidating to pop into an artist’s studio — but not at the Culture Crawl.

“Anybody who hasn’t done it, I would say ‘Come along because you can eavesdrop on so many interesting conversations, you can ask the most ridiculous questions, and you’ll soon find that all the artists are so passionate about what they’re doing… they can talk to you for hours and hours.”

Leanne Christie with the Culture Crawl says the Parker Street studios are always a must see.

The event started as a way for artists to bring more people to their studios. Now, it’s a massive self-guided tour running from the Waterfront to the Science World area to Victoria Drive.

“They visit the artists in their studios and their homes. They’re having pub stops, coffee shop stops, and lunch stops along the way. We’re finding now that whereas it used to be Parker Street people used to centre around… Now, it’s dispersed around the area,” says Christie.

She adds Parker Street building remains the heart of the Culture Crawl, with almost 150 artists studios for you to visit. “I’d say for people who have never experienced the crawl before, Parker Street is a must-stop.”
