PHOTOS: Moving day for historic Vancouver streetcar

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Thursday is moving day for a piece of Vancouver’s transportation history.

A streetcar from the now-defunct Vancouver Downtown Historic Railway at False Creek is going to be trucked to its new home at the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway in Cloverdale.

The 110-year old BC Electric Railway interurban was built in New Westminster and used to operate on the Arbutus Line until 1958.

It’s being donated by its Seattle owners to the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway.

They had been leasing the vehicle to the City of Vancouver.

Vancouver’s heritage railway, which was run by the volunteer-driven Transit Museum Society, stopped operating in 2012.

The tracks have sat idle ever since and have been torn up in some places by the City of Vancouver.

At one point, a modern streetcar system for Vancouver was proposed for Chinatown, Waterfront Station, Yaletown and Stanley Park.
