Bombardier to cut 7,000 jobs over two years

MONTREAL, QUE. (NEWS 1130) – Bombardier has announced it will eliminate 7,000 jobs over two years and more than one-third of those will be in Canada.

It’s the latest effort by the country’s largest aerospace company to turn itself around as it awaits word of federal aid. Federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau says Ottawa will consider Bombardier’s request for financial assistance, but no timeline for when any will be approved has been given.

The Montreal-based firm says the layoffs will include 2,830 jobs in Canada, including 24-hundred in Quebec alone. Nearly half of all the cuts would be in the rail division at Bombardier Transportation, which will lose 3,200 jobs.

Bombardier employs about 7,400 people around the world, according to its website.

The company says the cuts will be partly offset by hiring in certain areas, particularly as Bombardier plans to ramp up production of its new C-Series jets.

Layoff notices are expected in the next few weeks and should be completed by next year.

No job losses are anticipated at the company’s commercial aircraft business segment, which supplies airlines with passenger planes, including the C-Series.
