Only MRI machine at Lions Gate Hospital unexpectedly down

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Some patients expecting to have an MRI at Lions Gate Hospital in the near future are running into a delay.

The health authority has had to shut down its only scanner for an upgrade.

David Everett was supposed to have an MRI at Lions Gate tomorrow.

“I just got a call from that department, saying all MRI appointments have been cancelled immediately,” he tells NEWS 1130.

He was told no new appointments will be booked until early next month.

Vancouver Coastal Health says the machine is indeed down, but for a planned upgrade. Anna Marie D’Angelo with the health authority says the diagnostic imaging department decided to do it early.

“We’ve already had things in place for this. The urgent [patients] will be going to St. Paul’s or VGH.”

“We know that people are rearranging their lives… but when they do bring in the machine — when it gets upgraded — [it will] be speedier, faster… the images will be clearer,” adds D’Angelo.

She says routine MRIs will be rescheduled next month.
