Could apps help combat cyberbullying?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – High school students, tech experts, educators, and people in law enforcement are gathering today, for the BullyStop Hackathon.

They’ll be working to develop apps that help to put an end to bullying online.

Renee Goncalves is with the Canadian Safe Schools Network — which is hosting the event — and explains in the past, apps have been used to anonymously report cyberbullying.

“They can also be used as check-ins so to monitor somebody’s mental health per se, cause that area is strongly related to cyber bullying, so to see how you’re feeling that day.”

The Vancouver session is the first of four in cities across the country.

“We will have a vote at the end of each event which will allow us to have one best idea from each city, and our organziation is going to try to bring to life, to realize the one app concept that we think is really going to help make a difference.”

Today’s session is happening at Lighthouse Labs on West Hastings Street.
