VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Mountain biking is becoming more popular and along with that comes more injuries. Last season 100 people needed major emergency surgery for multiple injuries.
Dr. John Carsley with Vancouver Coastal Health says broken bones are the most common. “Usually upper extremities, wrists, arms, collar bones but we do see internal injuries, spleen injuries from hitting the handlebars.”
“Almost everybody knows how to ride a bike so when they go out to start mountain biking they may not think’
Gee I have to learn how to do this’ but you wouldn’t go out on a ski hill if you had never done it before.”
He suggests taking a skill lesson with a certified instructor and wearing protective gear like body armour and a helmet.
