Mental health advocate cycling from coast to coast

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It will take almost three months of pedaling but a young man set out from Vancouver this week headed for St. John’s, Newfoundland trying to raise awareness and money for mental health.

We spoke with Martin Bauman about why he’s so motivated to cycle from coast-to-coast.

Bauman, who is from Waterloo, Ontario, says his family has been touched by a number of mental health issues.

“It goes back for me to about the time when I was about 10-years-old, that was the year I lost a cousin to suicide.”

His father also battled depression. He says he’s inspired by everyone who has opened up about their battles.

“It’s been a cause that has been very important for me to ride for and it’s something that I know is going to motivate me every kilometre to get all the way to St John’s.”

Bauman set off from English Bay on Tuesday hoping to raise $10,000 for the Mood Disorders Society of Canada and the Canadian Mental Health Association.
