WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Homeowners are pumping out basements and surveying the damage after last night’s flooding from a strong thunder and hail storm in West Vancouver.
Donna Powers with the District of West Vancouver says last night’s rain, lightning, and hail – otherwise known as an ‘extreme weather event’ led to the flooding in the area of Willow Creek Road and Marine Drive.
“As a result of that, the creek flooded, and four homes were impacted. It appears that the creeks were likely blocked by hail, and that has since been cleared,” shares Powers, who says crews were kept quite busy overnight.
“There were multiple lightning strikes that crews were responding to, fortunately no fires resulted.”
Lana Lindsay had just moved into her home on Ross Crescent, and now her basement and backyard spent the night stewing in knee-high water.
“It was like a river,” shared Lindsay. “Just a huge mess of river down the road, through peoples properties, just gushing. You could’ve been swept away it was so intense.”
Her home is one of several on the block that got the worst of last night’s flooding. One home, up for sale, now has a swimming pool in the front driveway.
Fire crews cut power to all the houses on the street. Meanwhile, city workers cut down tree branches as they try to clean up affected areas.
Back at home, Lindsay is optimistic despite the damage, hoping to repair and rebuild soon.
