Big ambitions for tiny Vancouver-built electric car

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A three-wheeled electric microcar made in Vancouver debuted today, with an eye on the huge US auto market. The tiny battery-powered car is called the Solo, because it has just one seat.

Jeff Holland, speaking for Electra Meccanica Vehicles Corp. says “eighty-three per cent of people, according to the US department of transportation, commute daily by themselves in a car.

We don’t see any reason to have the extra seats or the extra weight.”

The biggest question with a purely electric vehicle is range, and Holland says the Solo can go about 160 kilometers on a full charge which takes about three hours.

Electra Meccanica says it has about 200 pre-orders for the Solo, which is priced at just under $20,000. Deliveries are forecast to begin in the first quarter of next year.

The company says the Solo is going through the Canadian and US approval process and is classified as a car in this country and most states.

It was unveiled today to the media at Van Dusen Botanical Garden and will be on display Saturday and Sunday at the Luxury and Supercar Weekend.
