VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – With all the headlines Creep Catchers is generating these days, ambushing what appear to be men seeking sex with young women, you might be wondering if a significant portion of our population are pedophiles.
An expert tells us the men caught on video aren’t necessarily suffering from a clinical condition.
Elise Chenier is a history professor at SFU with a specialty in sexual deviance. She doubts all the men confronted by Creep Catchers are addicted to sex with minors.
Pedophilia is a medical term usually reserved for people who seek out sex with kids under the age of 12.
Instead, she believes they are men who are seeking to exploit, and youngsters are perceived to be easier to manipulate.
“We shouldn’t assume these perverts have a certain predilections toward young people. They are attracted to people who are vulnerable.”
But just because they might not be pedophiles, doesn’t mean the behaviour is any more acceptable.
“I think it’s exceptionally egregious behavior. It’s not only distasteful and morally wrong, in this country it’s criminal.”
While it remains to be seen just how prevalent pedophilia is, Chenier says sexual exploitation is endemic in our society.
