Keep your fire lanes, hydrants clear of snow: Port Moody fire

PORT MOODY (NEWS 1130) – There’s still a lot more winter to get through in Metro Vancouver, and with another snow on the way, Port Moody Fire and Rescue is asking property managers to keep their fire lanes and hydrants clear.

Fire Chief Remo Faedo says they’ve spotted a few buildings in the city where snow from parking lots and sidewalks has been piled up into the path of firefighters.

“It’s usually strata properties, large complexes, where they’ll bring in a contractor to do snow removal,” he says. “When we see these sort of things, we have to act upon them. You never know when and where a fire may occur.”

Faedo adds anything that impedes the path of firefighters — be it a vehicle, tree branches, or in this case, snow — can cost first responders valuable time in an emergency.

Property owners are asked to clear a three foot perimeter around their hydrants, and ensure there’s a clear path to them.

“It’s our hope that strata corporations become aware of these issues and pay attention when they’re hiring snow removal contractors,” Faedo says.

Environment Canada is forecasting a significant snowfall for Metro Vancouver this coming weekend.
