Churches busier as casual Catholics celebrate Easter

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You may notice church parking lots have been a lot busier than usual today. Vancouver Archibishop Michael Miller believes that because attendance at Catholic churches goes up by about 30 per cent on Easter Sunday compared with a typical Sunday.

He admits for some people Easter and Christmas are the only dates that matter.

“I think it’s a testament that they’re hanging on, maybe not hanging on as tightly as I guess I would say they should. But it bears witness to the faith, that they haven’t really abandoned their beliefs, probably from childhood.”

Miller points out Catholics are also marking the end of Lent, which means people who have given up treats like chocolate or coffee over the last few weeks can finally indulge.

“If they have anger issues, or some other virtue that they really want to foster, they may really want to work on the opposite vice.”
