Rapaport ready to drop the mic in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – He’s worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Now, actor and director Michael Rapaport is lifting the curtain and sharing stories about some of those experiences.

The 47-year-old is bringing “I Am Rapaport: Stereo Podcast” to Vancouver. The show shares opinions on Rapaport’s career, sports, music, film, television, popular culture, life and everything in between.

“People won’t always agree with me but I sleep better at night that way,” says Rapaport.

Rapaport grew up in New York City, playing basketball, going to hip hop clubs and having fun with his best friend Gerald Moody, who co-hosts the live show.

“It’s funny, it’s cynical. 99.9 per cent of it is all tongue in cheek, and we don’t take ourselves too seriously, even when we sound like we do.”

Rapaport started doing stand-up comedy before moving into movies. Over the years, he’s appeared in films such as True Romance, The Basketball Diaries, Higher Learning, Beautiful Girls, CopLand, Men Of Honor, and on television with appearances on Friends, Boston Public, Prison Break, War at Home, and more.

His live show also features an audience Q&A which leads to stories about some of the stars he’s worked with over the years. For instance he worked with Leo DiCaprio in The Basketball Diaries.

“You knew he was going to separate himself from the pack. I could tell you that as soon as I met him. He just has a charisma about him, and a way about him. He’s just special.”

Or Sylvester Stallone when they worked together in 1997’s CopLand.

“He means so much to me growing up, and the Rocky films. It was dope working with him. He was the one who told me Burgess Meredith was the consummate stickman.”

Rapaport says he usually stays away from politics during his shows in the US because of how divided the country is these days, but might change things up at the first Canadian show in Vancouver. When it comes to US President Donald Trump, he finds the situation anything but laughable.

“Sometimes people go he’s just so stupid, he’s so funny. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it. To me, I don’t think anything he does is funny. There’s nothing cute.”

Trump isn’t the only one Rapaport scowls at. As a basketball fan, he far from being a supporter of LeBron James.

“I can’t stand LeBron. I don’t deny how great he is.” says Rapaport. “I just don’t like all the shenanigans and I don’t like the sort of culture he helped create in the NBA with the Big 3 and people moving around. And that’s what you’re suppose to do. Sports is about loving a team and hating a team. Loving a player and hating a player.”

The “I AM RAPAPORT: STEREO PODCAST” takes place at the Biltmore Cabaret in Vancouver on Saturday, May 13.
