Wildfire situation heats up in BC

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The province is heating up, and so too is the wildfire situation around BC.

There are two blazes of note, one south of Owen Lake and the other near Lac La Hache.

Even though the Lac La Hache fire is considered contained, it is still out of control.

Fire Information Officer Ryan Turcotte explains the distinction.

“The reason why we aren’t considering this fire as being held yet is because although we do have control lines around 100 per cent of the fire, we’re not yet confident that it won’t spread beyond those control lines just due to how it’s behaving.”

45 firefighters are battling those flames in addition to support from helicopters and heavy equipment.,

Meantime, the Owen Lake fire at 75 hectares is considered contained.

“We are now classifying this as being held. Due to the hard work of our firefighters on the ground there has been efficient suppression action taking on that fire, so the fire isn’t likely to spread beyond any existing boundaries that we’ve established.”

Smoke from it could be seen in Houston, 40 kilometres south.
