Mayor hopes Front Street development will revitalize downtown New Westminster

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – You’ll have the chance to see a newly improved portion of New Westminster, that’s been described as ‘unfriendly’ for many years.

Construction at the Front Street Mews development is coming to an end. Though there have been some delays, Mayor Jonathan Cote hopes it’ll be well worth the wait.

“We know it’s been tough for both residents and businesses within the area but we hope that the end product –which is a vastly improved street-scape– will make up for some of the frustration.”

He says Front Street is an important link between the Royal City’s downtown and the riverfront, and claims the project connects to the long-term vision of New Westminster.

“The big objective of this project is to kind of separate the truck route from the local retail street and kind of bring back to life this retail street that’s been covered and under-utilized for many decades.”

Cote is looking forward to welcoming the community to the new and improved stretch of road, which he claims hasn’t been a friendly place for the past 50-60 years.

“There’s no doubt removing a 60-year-old parkade structure and rebuilding an entire road network has been a challenging construction project,” says Cote.

Construction for the Front Street Mews project began over a year ago.
