Need for Speed: street racers charged, motorcycles impounded

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Six men have been charged with offences under the Motor Vehicle Act, after they were caught racing their motorcycles down ‘the cut’ in North Vancouver.

The RCMP’s Constable Brett Cunningham says Mounties were alerted to the “reckless” behaviour just around noon on Sunday.

“At that time a road block was set up and six drivers were stopped, all of which residents of the Lower Mainland.”

All six are charged with driving without due care and attention, and Cunningham adds one driver is in some more trouble. “[He] was already prohibited from driving as a result of a previous incident. He will now face an additional charge for driving while prohibited.”

He says an officer in an unmarked vehicle followed the group of motorcyclists down Highway 1. That’s where he says they were seen passing at high rates of speed without signaling, using the shoulder of the road and driving without consideration for other motorists.

“The motorcycles are impounded for a period of seven days, for driving or operating a motor vehicle as defined in the motor vehicle act,” Cunningham explains.

This comes just more than a month after a man driving a Ferrari was caught going more than 200 kilometers an hour over the Lions Gate Bridge.

According to Cunningham, this incident is unrelated to this recent one, but officers continue to see this type of behaviour.

“We of course don’t want to see any fatalities or injuries or collisions as a result of this dangerous behaviour. We’re going to continue with the traffic enforcement and continue to proactively educate the public on the dangers of driving unsafely.”

It’s unclear exactly how fast the motorcyclists were going.
