Heatwave smashes temperature records across BC

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Dozens of new temperature records were set across BC on Labour Day as the mercury soared.
It’s all thanks to “an unusually strong ridge pattern is bringing extreme heat to the Lower Mainland,” according to Environment Canada.
“The unofficial count brings the total up to 35 British Columbia temperature records smashed on Labour Day with most of them being right here around the South Coast, including 28.4 degrees for Vancouver Harbour, 34.4 in Pitt Meadows, and 36.4 Abbotsford,” says NEWS 1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate.
Some of those records date back to 1939.
And it wasn’t just the Lower Mainland, either; the hottest place in the country yesterday was just north of Vancouver.
“We had temperatures right along the water’s edge reaching record highs of 30.8 degrees in White Rock,” says Lacate. “It was 33.6 in West Vancouver — another all-time record for the date. And in some areas just outside of Metro Vancouver, we saw numbers off the charts for September, including 37.6 degrees in Hope and your Canada-wide hot spot, 38.2 in Squamish.”
It will stay hot and sweaty today and tomorrow through the day, before finally cooling late Wednesday overnight.
There’s even a chance of showers during the day on Thursday.
