Half of Lower Mainland drivers getting ready for winter driving: ICBC

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Nearly half of drivers in the Lower Mainland who took part in a survey from ICBC say they plan to, or have already, put winter tires on their vehicle in anticipation of another snowy season.

Alex Lee is with ICBC and says last year’s nasty weather may have had an impact.

“Definitely when we drive in poor weather conditions it is challenging and most people have seen those situations. That’s why definitely there are things that people can do just to ensure they don’t put themselves in these situations.”

“Our survey did mention that nearly half of drivers plan or already have put winter tires on their vehicles. And that’s encouraging because it shows that people are showing a proactive approach.”

Lee adds the survey found one quarter of drivers in the Lower Mainland admitted to experiencing at least one ‘near miss’ on the road last year.

Lee adds serious crashes involving injury or death increased by 10 per cent across the province during last year’s snowy winter, compared with 2015.

He says top concerns for many people include other drivers who don’t slow down or adjust their driving and drivers who don’t know how to navigate in snow and ice.
