Reena Virk’s killer, Kelly Ellard, seeking day parole

By

SAANICH (NEWS 1130) – A Victoria-area mother who lost a child 20 years ago believes there’s a strong chance her killer will be granted day parole today.

Suman Virk says, over the years, her health has suffered as she watches Kelly Ellard repeatedly try to avoid punishment for first beating, then drowning, her 14-year-old daughter.

“The loss of Reena and then, all the trials. And you know, the whole thing has taken a toll physically and mentally, emotionally. As long as these things keep coming up, it just makes everything fresh again.”

Virk says she’s not attending the now 35-year-old Ellard’s hearing in Abbotsford.

“At this point, it doesn’t matter because her behaviour has shown how much progress she has made in those 20 years.”

She says Ellard’s never expressed remorse, but if she’s finally willing to accept responsibility for her actions, “There’s probably a good chance of her getting out.”

Ellard allowed temporary escorted prison release

Reporter: “Is there any part of you that’s still expecting an apology from her?”

Virk: “No. No, I think if that was going to happen, it would have happened a long time ago.”

Ellard was 15 in November of 1997 when she took part in a swarming attack at a Victoria-area park and later held Reena’s head under water until she drowned.

Virk says she won’t be surprised if she gains more freedom. “Maybe life would be easier if they just did let her out and then it’ll be all finished.”

Earlier this year, Ellard was granted escorted passes to take the son she had in prison to doctor’s appointments and parenting classes.

“Instead of improving her life, she’s made it more complicated by having a child with another inmate,” says Virk. “So we’ll see what happens.”
