Sports Page memories on show at new exhibit

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – For nearly three decades, “Sports Page” was the go-to destination for fans looking for their nightly fix of highlights and humour. While it isn’t coming back to your TV anytime soon, a new exhibit at the BC Sports Hall of Fame may be the next best thing.

“Sports Page” was on the air for almost 30 years, beginning in 1977. The exhibit marks 40 years since it started.

But curator Jason Beck says gathering material was no easy task, considering it has been off the air for over a decade.

“This was not your standard blueprint for putting together a Hall of Fame or museum exhibit. Normally, we start off with a bit of a collection as a base and then kind of work with people that were involved in whatever subject we’re doing to supplement that. But other than just a handful of items and a handful of tapes that we had from Paul Carson and his family, there really wasn’t much here. So it was really starting from scratch.”

The exhibit includes a re-creation of a Sports Page anchor desk, interactive trivia games, memorabilia, as well as inside stories and anecdotes.

“We’re going to have several hours of footage playing in the gallery, from the first show, September 5th 1977, to the last show, September 2nd 2005, lots of bloopers, lots of highlights. The hosts have often kept tapes of their favourite show and their favourite stories, so we have a lot of those that will be playing,” Beck says.

The BC Sports Hall of Fame is located inside Gate A of BC Place Stadium. The exhibit opens at noon on Saturday.
