OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – A new poll is showing support for the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project in Canada, but the Federal Natural Resource Minister is steering clear of the survey.
The poll done by Nanos Research for the Globe finds one-third of Canadians want the pipeline built, but Minister Jim Carr says polls are released every day.
“We’re confident in the position that we have taken. We believe that many Canadians agree that responsible resource development along historic investment in the ocean is a good balance to strike and we strike it.”
The poll also suggests the same number of Canadians don’t like the idea of using taxpayer money to save the project–and Carr feels the same way.
He wasn’t willing to give an update about the state of financial negotiations with Kinder Morgan.
“I wouldn’t be wise to comment on the state of those discussions,” Carr says. On Sunday night, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley met with Finance Minister Bill Morneau for those discussions. “We know that we are they are being conducted in good faith and that’s important.”
We’re getting you that pipeline!’ says Trudeau
Meantime, the Federal government is reassuring at least one Alberta community that the expansion will be built.
Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi says he met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week on an unrelated issue, and the topic that’s been the centre of a heated battle between BC and Alberta came up.
“The very first thing he said to me was, ‘We’re getting you that pipeline!'” says Nenshi. “I’m pleased that these conversations are continuing, but I’d like to see shovels on the ground.”
Kinder Morgan has put a deadline on May 31st to say if it will move forward with the project or not.
