VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – People trying to travel between Vancouver and the North Shore dealt with major backups today.
The Lions Gate Bridge was closed to all vehicles, bikes and pedestrians for over four hours due to a police incident.
Traffic was being rerouted to the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge, which led to major delays along Highway 1.
The closure meant a lot of people who would have normally taken a bus over the bridge had to turn to the SeaBus instead.
There was higher-than-normal volume on the route across the water, with photos on social media showing massive crowds at the Lonsdale Quay terminal.
Four bus routes that normally cross the bridge were being diverted to SeaBus terminals.
“Earlier this morning, at the tail-end of rush hour, we were seeing situations where customers were having to wait more than one sailing because the boats were just too full. I’m hearing that’s starting to subside now,” explains Jill Drews with TransLink.
Some passengers had to wait three sailings to get on board.
