Naked beach goers attempt to set new world record at Wreck Beach

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Wreck Beach Preservation Society was hoping to set a new Guinness World Record Sunday afternoon for the largest simultaneous skinny-dip.

Society Chair Judy Williams says defeating the previous record would be no easy task.

“We are trying to get the most people into the water at the same time. Ireland just set the record with 2,505 women simultaneously and we are hoping to beat that,” says Society Chair Judy Williams.

Even though a large crowd showed up, 586 to be exact, the society fell short of breaking the record. But Williams says they still raised funds that will go towards conservation efforts for the beach.

“They’re each donating $5 for each naked person in the water, that means $10 per person in the water which a good fundraiser for us.”

She says even without the bragging rights of a world record, the event also focused on body positivity.

“Body acceptance is the idea, and nude recreation is the way. You have to be comfortable in your own skin before you can be comfortable with other people. It’s very important to accept yourself.”
