Council hopeful wants to bring Pride Week to Mission

MISSION (NEWS 1130) – With the Vancouver Pride Festival coming up this weekend, a man in Mission is hoping his city can also show the LGBTQ community some love.

Council hopeful Ken Herar says he’s going before Mission Council to see if they’ll make a proclamation celebrating Pride Week.

“We need it, we need to stay on top of it, other communities have risen up, have risen their flag,” he says.

Herar says this is about letting people know everyone is welcomed. “As our community grows, people from the gay and lesbian community, transgender, they’re welcome in our community. We need to hear their voice.”

He thinks in terms of acknowledging Pride, Mission is behind the times. “Other communities have risen up — risen the flag. I’ve seen a picture of them raising the flag in Langley and I said, ‘Wow. You know, our community needs to do the same thing.”

“We’ve come so far. We look back and in the ’70s, nobody talked about it. It was very hidden, that this was part of our community. We’re happy to have them and be leaders. And hopefully, some can stand up for office and lead and educate people That’s what it’s all about.”

He says he hasn’t heard any feedback from any councillors yet, but he’s optimistic his motion will pass.

Herar announced he will be running for council in the upcoming election last month.
