NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – One man is in custody after three people were reportedly assaulted with a hammer on the Queensborough Bridge Sunday afternoon.
New Westminster police say the incident took place around 1 p.m.
“Officers responded to reports of an assault in progress and the suspect allegedly had assaulted three different people,” said Sgt Jeff Scott. “When officers arrived they confronted the suspect, who had a weapon.”
Police say a 28-year-old reportedly assaulted an elderly man with a weapon, believed to be a hammer. Two people intervened to help but officers say the suspect began attacking them.
Scott said officers used a “less-lethal” distance weapon called “Arwen” to stop the suspect, but he continued to attack the victim. Police then used “another less lethal option” that reportedly allowed officers to run in and take him into custody. The man was arrested at the scene.
“Thankfully none of the people who had been assaulted have any life-threatening injuries. They’ve all be taken to a local area hospital,” Scott added.
Officers say is still unknown what led up to the assault or if the suspect knew the victims.
“Investigators will continue to speak with witnesses as they work through all the different details of what happened today.”
The Bridge is expected to remain partially closed throughout the afternoon as officers continue to investigate the scene.
