Most Metro Vancouverites back Surrey LRT, SkyTrain extension projects: poll

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It seems most people in Metro Vancouver back the region’s two biggest pending transportation projects.
A poll from Research Co. finds more than two thirds of respondents across the region are in favour of the proposed Surrey–Newton–Guildford light rail project in Surrey.
“[In Surrey], 62 per cent of residents are in favour of the LRT project and 34 per cent who are not. But it’s still almost a two-to-one margin on finishing this idea that has been talked about for a long time,” said Research Co. president Mario Canseco.
And with the B-Line buses crammed, it’s probably no surprise a lot of people in the region are in favour of extending SkyTrain to UBC.
“There’s a high level of support for the extension of the SkyTrain Millenium Line to Arbutus — 82 per cent of Metro Vancouver residents. But there’s an even higher level of support for taking this Millennium Line beyond Arbutus and all the way to the UBC campus,” said Canseco.
The pollster’s numbers find 87 per cent support an extension to UBC — and they aren’t only people who already take transit.
“We do see those who bike, those who walk, those who drive are also happy with this idea. There’s definitely a high level of support,” said Canseco.
The Millennium Line Broadway Extension is in the planning and public engagement phase.
