Communities survey storm damage as they prepare for more rain

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS 1130) – After Thursday night’s walloping from that major storm, flooded out roads in Maple Ridge are now an issue, as is a nearby rising river.
The weather improved Friday, but as locals get a better look at the aftermath, they’re also getting ready to batten down the hatches once again.
On 224th Street near 128th Street, flooding from the storm is quite evident with parts of the road washed out.
Although water levels have receded, some homes on either side of the rural road had yards completely flooded. Others have gotten luckier, with the water reaching just to the crest of porches.
People living in the area near say a creek overflowed in the nearby Alouette River, which looked like it was about to crest Friday morning, coming just less than two feet from the banks and a nearby bridge.
Langley, Abbotsford, Surrey, Mission, Port Coquitlam and Maple Ridge were the hardest hit by the storm, which also knocked out power to thousands of customers.
At the height of the storm, about 10,000 B.C. Hydro customers didn’t have electricity.
The rainfall warning has ended for most of the region. Despite some sun in the forecast for Friday, Meteorologist Russ Lacate says more rain is expected tomorrow, which could be an issue for some already dealing with water damage.
Russ expects winds to die down through Friday, but adds they’ll be coming back on Saturday with the next storm.
Forecasters said the ‘subtropical plume of moisture’ was expected to bring about 50 to 80 millimetres of rain with it over the course of 24 hours.
This storm came just a few days after sudden downpours caused flash floods in parts of the Lower Mainland.
