VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Despite some snow in the interior this week, the Coquihalla is in good shape as people head out of town for the long weekend.
Bob Gilowski with VSA Highway Maintenance says conditions are good.
“Right now road conditions are wet, there is snow on the shoulder edges, but the good news is that we head into the weekend and up to Monday we are expecting a drying trend,” he says.
But he says people should still drive with caution.
“That could be good news for travellers but we’re always wanting people to stay vigilant when they’re driving and if they do hit winter-driving conditions, just to slow down,” Gilowski adds. “And a reminder that at this time of the year winter tires are required over the high elevation passes.”
And if you come across a plow or maintenance vehicle, don’t forget to give them room to work, Gilowski says.
“These are large pieces of equipment that do throw a lot of snow so just stay well back of them, either a tandem or a grater, and allow the men and women who are inside those vehicles to perform their work.”
Winter tires are required on highways like the Coquihalla until the end of March.
