VANCOUVER (news 1130) — The Vancouver Giants are going old school this evening as the local WHL squad battles the Tri-City Americans at the Pacific Coliseum.
The teams will face off tonight in the building that hosted the Giants from 2001 to 2016, and where they won the Memorial Cup in 2007.
Tonight’s game celebrates the history of hockey at the building and the guestlist will be a who’s who of Vancouver hockey history. Cliff Ronning, Gino Odjick, Orland Kurtenbach, Stan Smyl, and Richard Brodeur among others will be there, as well as long-time Vancouver Canucks announcer Jim Robson, who has seen it all at the historic venue on Renfrew Street.
“It’s been a great rink and it still is. It’s good to see it being used again,” Robson tells Sportsnet 650.
“There are a lot of interesting times, even losing seasons. That’s it about sports, you know never know who’s going to win, who the stars are going to be when you go to a sporting event. And even though there were a lot of years without play-off games, there were still some memorable moments.”
Next Saturday, the Giants are back at the Coliseum to play the Victoria Royals for the annual Teddy Bear Toss game, in which the audience is invited to throw stuffed animals onto the ice when the Giants score their first goal. The animals are then donated to children’s charities to be handed out to those of lesser means.
Tonight’s game starts at 7 p.m.
