Devastating start to December with three deadly crashes over the weekend

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s been a deadly start to what is normally one of the worst times of year for road safety.

Three people were killed and at least four others were hurt in three separate incidents over the weekend.

It all began on Highway 1 in North Vancouver Saturday evening, where a dramatic three-car crash left one man dead in a construction zone, under the Mountain Highway overpass.

One of the vehicles is said to have driven into oncoming traffic.

“My husband is dead because of idiots, that’s why I do this job,” a woman who works traffic control in that area told NEWS 1130.

She says she’s fed up with people driving irresponsibly and putting others at risk every day.

“I see them speeding in the cone zone, not paying attention whatsoever, jumping through our tubes into our cone zone,” she added.

Witnesses told NEWS 1130 they saw a white pickup truck and a small vehicle in the aftermath of the collision, when the latter burst into flames.

It’s reported around 20 drivers got out of their vehicles to try and help the people trapped in the car that was being engulfed in flames.

Just hours later, a woman was killed in Surrey when a car and mini van collided. As a result of that crash, two adults and two children were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Surrey RCMP says that crash happened around 12:45 a.m. Sunday in the area of 80th Avenue and 128th Street. Investigators have called for witnesses or anyone who may have dash cam footage to come forward.

Before the weekend came to a close, a serious crash shut down sections of the Sea-to-Sky Highway for hours, and left a third person dead.

Police had traffic down to single-lane-alternating traffic south of the Chance Creek Bridge for some time.

There’s no official word on what caused any of these crashes.
