Langley tree farm robbed of $1,000 worth of Christmas trees

LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) — A Langley tree farm has been robbed of more than $1,000 worth of Christmas Trees over the last weekend.

Ken Giesbrecht owns Giesbrecht’s Tree Farm and says a few trees are stolen every year, but this was a big hit. He suspects they knew the place since they took trees that are worth more than other ones, stealing roughly 15 trees in total. He says they have some surveillance cameras, but he’s hesitant to put in any other security measures.

“We’re trying to keep our property inviting to the public, without putting a big fortress where we got big fencing for them to have to come through,” Giesbrecht says. “So, there is still a comfortable place to come, but you know, we have to kind of weigh the situation out.”

Giesbrecht adds he has filed a police report with the RCMP, which is how his business has retrieved stolen trees in the past, but he is also putting faith in the community whose members have been known to chase down and confront alleged tree thieves.

“The community has actually been a great benefit to us over the years,” he says. “We have always relied on our neighbours to watch out for us, which has been really good.”

He says theft is part of working in the agricultural sector and as long as the losses do not exceed gains, his business will be alright.
