PETA compares racist, homophobic language to phrases like ‘bring home the bacon’

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) –  People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, better known as PETA, is facing some backlash after the organization took to Twitter to call for the end of “speciesism” on our everyday conversations.

“Just as it became unacceptable to use racist, homophobic, or ableist language, phrases that trivialize cruelty to animals will vanish as more people begin to appreciate animals for who they are and start ‘bringing home the bagels’ instead of the bacon,” read one of the tweets.

PETA talked about the importance of words, noting that language should evolve along with social justice.

The organization then suggested ways in which people could stop using “anti-animal language.” Some of the examples include saying “feed two birds with one scone,” instead of “kill two birds with one stone,” and “taking the flower by the thorns” instead of “taking the bull by the horns.”

But not everyone was happy with PETA’s message. Thousands of people replied to PETA’s tweets, complaining about the comparison.

“Comparing animal phrases to the struggles of people of color and the LGBTQ is the most PETA thing I’ve ever seen,” wrote one woman on Twitter.

“Mentally abusing entire minorities is now being treated the same as saying phrases that have animals in them. Because ‘food lives matter,’” read another message.

The tweet thread had more than 11,000 comments within hours of being posted.
