Prime Minister Justin Trudeau talks to Breakfast Television Toronto in his first year-end interview, reflecting on 2018 and looking what’s in store for 2019.
On current state of world politics and the rise of populism and right-wing ideologies in Europe and North America:
“Yes, there is a certain amount of disruption going on in the world right now — and quite frankly, the conversations I have with leaders and citizens all around the world is ‘Thank You, Canada, for staying strong and firm to the values we know and are important to resisting the populism and divisiveness and the negativity that is injecting instability into our global system.’ Canadians are going to stay firm and strong, and anchored in our rules and values because that’s what people expect.”
On Alberta’s oil industry and its future amid an oil glut globally:
“The real core of the problem is that there is no access to markets other than the United States for Canadian oil from the oil sands. We need to get resources to other markets than the United States. That’s why we purchased the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. That’s why we’re focused on moving forward in the right way.”
On Trudeau’s personal relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump:
“The president is, as every knows, unpredictable and likes to shake things up a bit. My job is not to get wrapped up in feelings or personality, my job is to defend Canada’s and Canadians’ interests. My job is to make sure we have a constructive relationship, that we move forward in ways that support Canadians.”
