Vancouver fire crews respond to third-alarm fire in Vancouver’s West End

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Vancouver fire crews have managed to stave off a larger damage after a bike shop in the Westend caught fire earlier today.

Captain Mark McKeller says a third-alarm fire broke out in the rear of the Bikes and Blades Rentals store near the corner of Denman Street and Alberni Street in Downtown Vancouver, but thanks to a quick response, firefighters took control of the situation before it could escalate. He says the almost 45-strong crew had to tear down the walls inside store and go through the roof to gain control of the fire.

“There’s going to be some pretty extensive damage,” McKeller says. “I think the guys did a great jobs with the early intervention. We got here quick, first in company was here in less than five minutes.”

He adds no injuries were reported as the building was vacant at the time of the emergency and an investigation is underway to find out why the fire broke out. Traffic in the area is still heavily backed up while the clean-up goes on.
