Boxing Day shopping is in full swing at Metrotown

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) — It’s been a breeze for some Boxing Day shoppers who said they’ve scored sweet deals, although others find the crowds, line-ups and energy a bit much.
Hundreds of people braving inevitable crowds at Metrotown shopping mall lined up outside premium stores to score a deal. whether it’s bath bombs, shoes, TV’s and video games, today’s the day to snatch them up at bargain prices.
“It’s been very good because we got here early, perfect parking and no crowds, but we’re ready to stop now,” says one Boxing Day bargain hunter who is calling it a day.
“I come here every year; it’s a tradition,” one woman says. “Even though I don’t need it, I come and I get a news purse.”
“The Nintendo Switch plus the Mario Party for $380, and that’s a pretty good deal,” says a gamer.
“I don’t know. Everything is so crazy here,” says one shopper who is overwhelmed by the annual frenzy.
In Britain, it was a custom for tradesmen to collect Christmas boxes of money or presents on the first weekday after Christmas as thanks for good service throughout the year. But there’s no real proof that is the reason we call it Boxing Day.
It’s also a public holiday in some parts of the former British Empire, though it is a religious holiday as well — St. Stephen’s Day, celebrated in parts of Europe. In countries like Germany, Romania, Poland, and Hungary, it’s marked as a second Christmas Day.
